Floral power

THE ANNUAL Penang Floral Fest, this year, being held from May 31 to June 7, at the Penang Botanic Gardens showcased an array of intra-fest events. Among the highlights lined up were the orchid, adenium, bonsai and carnivorous plant exhibitions and competitions, a sculpture contest and a floral art show.

Our slideshow below features photos from the floral art show, organised by the Penang Floral Art Society, headed currently by Mrs Chu Kok An.  Defined as the "art of using plant materials and flowers to create a pleasing and balanced composition" (read here for more), this art form has had a rather illustrious mentor in Penang -- Dato’ Lim Bian Yam, who in 2005, was awarded the Living Heritage Treasure of Penang award. He alongside a few colleagues founded the society in 1962 and proceeded to bring a distinctive style of flower arrangement, now known as the Malaysian style to international recognition. This technique has followers all around the world.

Alongside its very successful undertakings that includes international exhibitions and publications, the society has worked with many NGOs like the Red Crescent Society, National Cancer of Malaysia, Penang Branch, Penang Buddhist Association, etc.
