| George Town in a state of atrophy |

ATROPHY is a state of degeneration. It happens because systems, biological, social or physical, are in crisis – a state where it cannot find enough energy or resources for continued self-regeneration and self-sustenance. Large parts of inner George Town are in that state. The question is what are the resources that would come in to pull the city out of this state of atrophy? Would it be destructive of its current intercultural uniqueness, as extreme “modernising” energies do? Would it be crass business greed? Would it be focused and guided under strict plans for its own well-being, taking into account its immense cultural value to the state and to the country? Plants on buildings are a symptom of this atrophy. We cannot place the blame of neglect solely on owners or people who occupy the buildings. We need to see the overall picture. George Town needs new positive energies to preserve its unique way of life in a holistic manner. These pictures were taken in early March 2009 and depict the buildings only at that point in time.
