Fish landing at Paramount
Monday, 24 January 2011 23:17

NEXT to Paramount Hotel in George Town, Penang, is, unknown to many Penangites, the only government-sanctioned fish-landing spot in the city. Known as Bangsal Nelayan Unit Paramount, the spot is part of a project between the Persatuan Nelayan Teluk Bahang and the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia.

It has been in existence for decades; the few who know about it would often go fishing and boating there, a unique way to pass the time in the otherwise bustling city. One can often watch as fishermen come away with an assortment of fishes and crabs. The spot can be found by going down an innocuous narrow path alongside the hotel.

Located along Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, Paramount Hotel itself has been around since 1948, offering affordable accommodation with a beachfront view, a rare combination for a budget hotel so close to the city. About fifteen minutes away from the CBD and the Penang Heritage Trail, or five minutes by bus, the hotel is a colonial bungalow that still retains an old-world charm unique to such buildings in Penang, and has been operated by a family for three generations now.

The hotel boasts Ocean Green, reputed to be one of the best seafood restaurants in Penang. Among the dishes it serves are deep-fried spring chicken, freshly-grilled crab meat topped with cheese and the more traditional Hainanese dishes like choon piah and fried noodles. The restaurant offers customers reasonably-priced meals, coupled with a view of the waters, and the dozens of fishermen going out to sea to make their living.
