The great debate that may never be

THE MUCH awaited open debate between Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng on Kampung Buah Pala currently hangs in the balance as both have failed to reach a compromise on the preset conditions. Read here

DAP and Gerakan have been, over the months, trading barbs over which party is responsible for the land transaction which resulted in a standoff between residents of the village and the state over the issue of compensation. Read here and here.

This resulted in the Penang Gerakan Youth submitting a memorandum to challenge CM Lim for a debate on the issue. Read here. The challenge was heeded by the CM, who then insisted he would only debate his predecessor, Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, and no one else as the challenge was issued by Dr Koh himself in August. In response, Dr Koh agreed to the challenge provided that "all relevant documents pertaining to the Kampung Buah Pala saga should be made public, while Lim must be willing to 'truthfully answer three simple questions' on the issue". Meanwhile, the Kampung Buah Pala residents who are still seeking the truth about the tragedy of their village, want the current CM and his predecessor to proceed with their proposed debate. “We want the truth. The debate should proceed in the name of accountability and transparency,” said the association chairman M. Sugumaran. Read here
