Penang Hill railway upgrade back on track

THE overhaul of the Penang Hill funicular railway line for a modern system is set to go, after it was launched by Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Ng Yen Yen last week (October 20, 2009). Initially planned for June this year, the project had to be delayed when the federal government faced opposition from from hill residents and heritage groups. Read here and here.

A coalition called Friends of Penang Hill expressed concern the hillslope would be unduly cut and instead,  that all the system required was for it to be significantly refurbished -- with the rails, cable sheaves, motors, gear boxes and electrical systems changed. Read here

Datuk Seri Ng said the redevelopment was necessary as the service has experienced several breakdowns, marring the image of tourism in Malaysia. Read here and here for further insight into the ministry's opinion on the matter.

Meanwhile, the Penang Hill train will no longer be listed as an icon to promote tourism in Malaysia effective next year (2010). Read here
