George Town celebrates for a month

CELEBRATING the second anniversary of George Town being honoured with the Unesco World Heritage Site listing, the Penang State Government, Municipal Council of Penang Island, George Town World Heritage Incorporated, Penang Global Tourism and the various communities of Penang have organised the George Town Festival 2010. Featuring over 80 programmes, the month-long festival showcases a “feast of theatre, music, dance, film, arts, food, fashion, photography, inspirational talk and visual spectacle on the streets”.  Read here. Scheduled to be an annual event, the festival is to:

  • Celebrate George Town as a Unesco World Heritage Site and to showcase the unique diversity of our culture and heritage,
  • Present an international festival of the highest standards to platform local and international performances in enriching the cultural environment of Penang, and 
  • Serve as a catalyst to arouse wider public interest in the arts and to encourage cultural exchange and dialogue

CM Lim Guan Eng was very upbeat about the potential of the festival, even with its limited budget of RM1 million (read here). “We hope to showcase the unique diversity of our culture and heritage. We want to transform George Town into an Asia cultural city... We are a small island with big ambitions." Read here 

Programme director Joe Sidek hopes that this event will be a "catalyst to showcase the beauty, vibrancy and diversity of George Town. I want everyone to know what a wonderful, lively city it is and I hope to achieve that through this event." Read here

There will be street celebrations, open houses to private and public heritage buildings, boat rides at the famous clan jetties and much more. The July 7 event themed “Streets Come Alive, Unforgettable George Town” will be a full day of events throughout the city including street cultural performances by the multicultural communities of Penang. About 200,000 people are expected to attend the festival.
