Teachers transferred due to oversupply on island
Sunday, 19 December 2010 19:54

OVER 100 teachers on Penang island have received letters instructing them to transfer to schools on the mainland, including Sungai Petani and and Kulim, starting in December. "I will have to fork out an extra RM25 per day for the journey and toll charges which equals to RM500 per month," said an Air Itam teacher who is being transferred to Bukit Mertajam.

State Education director Ibrahim Mohamad said the transfer is necessary as there are too many teachers on the island, while NUTP secretary-general Loke Yim Pheng said that the government should pay for the added expenses the teachers are facing. The teachers only received their transfer letters, dated November 26, on December 13. Read here.

Meanwhile, Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services president Omar Osman said that 350 contract employees under the state education department face unemployment once their contracts end. Read here.
