Staging a fake kidnapping

PENANG had the dubious honour of playing host to a fake kidnapping last week, a deception that was revealed after two lovers were arrested in a hotel.

A local woman in her 20s and her Nigerian boyfriend conspired to extort RM1mil from her father by staging a kidnapping. The father, a 53-year-old accountant based in Kuching, lodged a police report after receiving a call demanding the ransom money. Read here.

The college graduates were said to be "living it up" in hotels in Langkawi and Penang as police scrambled to locate them. The ploy was discovered when police traced calls the supposed "kidnapper" made to the girl's phone in Langkawi and Penang hotels.
